Mr Akhtar Hussain as General Secretary of the National Workers Party had participated in the All Parties Conference (APC) called by our former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif on July 7-8, 2007 in London. Mr. Abid Hassan Minto as President of the party and Mr Yousif Masti Khan as Voice President could not proceed to London as they could not get the visa in time; therefore, Akhtar Hussain had represented the party in All Parties Conference. You will also find the viewpoint of our party which I had presented in All Parties Conference which also reflects political situation in our country and our stand.
The decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan by allowing the petition of the Chief Justice of Pakistan by a short order has been welcomed by the people and it has left a grave impact not only on the question of independence of judiciary but also on the political situation in Pakistan. We must have been following the events; the struggle waged by the lawyers with their unprecedented unity throughout the country was fully supported not only by the civil society, media but also by the common masses. The issues raised by the lawyers were not only limited to withdrawal of Reference against the Chief Justice and his restoration but to the independence of judiciary and also pertaining to the role of armed forces in politics and so also for removal of General Pervez Musharraf as Army Chief being President and for formation of an interim Government with consensus of opposition and holding of free and fair elections.
After the judgment the present regime has become very defensive, therefore, you have seen that President Musharraf has immediately met Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto at Dubai and once again the PPP leadership has agreed for another adjustment and alignment with the military leadership, of course under the guidance and help of USA. This attitude of the PPP was clear even in the All Parties London Conference as they refused to resign from the assemblies to sharpen the agitation and so also they refused to become part of the All Parties Democratic Movement.
The London Conference has formed a 12-member National Action Committee and Mr. Abid Hassan Minto is one of the members of that committee. Our task is very difficult. On the one hand we are struggling for the democratic institutions, for ousting the army from politics with alignment of all the political parties and on the other hand we are facing the religious extremism and terrorism which is a conflict within the opposition alliance.
Our party has formed a co-ordination with nationalist and secular parties who are all within the greater alliance of All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM). After the judgment the people have not welcomed the meeting or secret understanding and arrangement between General Pervez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto of PPP. The Bar Associations have declared for continuance of the movement for independence of judiciary and so also against the role of armed forces in politics.
